Rotosound strings are synonymous with timeless sound and durability, and are an important part of British-European rock history.

James How (former violin student and later graduate engineer) began making strings for his own instruments privately at an early age. From this, he founded the Rotosound company in 1958, which gained worldwide recognition for producing high-quality strings within a very short time. The first Rotosound artists included musical greats such as the Shadows, Beatles, Rolling Stones as well as the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Rotosound also produced strings for the guitar rarity Vox Organ as well as for the Burns Guitar Company. John Entwistle (The Who) was the driving force behind the development of the SWING BASS Roundwound string.

The success spread quickly and attracted other artists and bands like Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd and Queen as the "British Invasion". Jaco Pastorius, The Edge, Oasis, Guthrie Govan, Billy Sheehan, Doug Wimbish and currently Michael Amott (Arch Enemy, Carcass) and Mikey Demus (Skindred) knew and know how to appreciate the legendary Rotosound sound.

What began with electric bass strings expanded to SWING, JAZZ and SOLO bass strings, which already stood for world-class quality when the strings of other manufacturers were still in the laborious development phase. Today, the Rotosound range comprises more than 130 different sets of strings: 57 electric bass, 21 acoustic guitar, 3 acoustic bass, 4 classical guitar, 31 electric guitar and 14 different sets for traditional instruments.

Bronze Bass

This round wound bronze string delivers a deep and punchy tone for acoustic bass guitars. The tonal response of the specially formulated bronze knows how to brighten up a dull sound from certain hollowbody basses, earning the Rototsound string a loyal following among acoustic bassists.

products

Super Bronze

Developed by Rotosound in 1974, Super Bronze is the string of choice for long sustain. Using patented Piano String Design technology on 92/8 phosphor bronze windings, it also offers unsurpassed presence and brightness.

products

Jumbo King

Rotosound's best-selling acoustic guitar string is known for excellent tone, clarity and sustain. Made in the UK, the string is wound with 92/8 bronze alloy.

products

Pure

The Pure Nickels are the ideal set for blues, rockabilly and smooth rock, and go perfectly with bright vintage pickups. Compared to the nickel-plated steel wound rotos, these 100% nickel strings offer a warm tone that lasts longer than their plated counterparts. By bending easily, Pure Nickels are particularly easy on the fingers.

products

British Steels

Dating back to the sixties, Rotosound's early electric guitar strings are considered the epitome of the British guitar sound and the strings favoured by music legends. They offer them a distinctly bright tone with more presence than their nickel-plated counterparts. As British Steels are nickel-free, they are ideal for players with nickel allergies.

products

Jazz

Developed in 1966, Monel Flatwound strings are ideal for a deep, warm, rich and classic bass sound. The premium alloy Monel has tonal and haptic advantages over the flatwound strings of other manufacturers. Consisting of about 2/3 nickel, 1/3 copper and 2% iron, the strings have a high tensile strength and are resistant to corrosion, salt and acids.

products

Tru

Developed and patented in 1962, Tru strings are made of 80/20 brass wire wound. With medium-low tension and a soft surface, these strings deliver a warm, deep sound and long sustain.

products

Solo

These Solo Bass strings, developed in the mid-1970s, are exceptional: very similar to the legendary Swing Bass but somewhat quieter, they are not ground in the so-called pressurewound process, but are rolled by machine at high pressure after manufacture. This process preserves the original mass of the strings and also the coveted brilliance. The pleasant "LINEA" surface ensures less finger noise, reduces fret wear and is ideal on fretless basses or for recording use in the studio.

products

Nexus

The 92/8 phosphor bronze of the Jumbo King strings is used for this string wound, but with a clear polymer coating that has a more subtle tone, longer life, muffled finger noise and high resistance to sweat. The unwound strings are made from a special "platinum" coated piano wire.

Ultramag

High energy within reach! Rotosound materials expert John Doughty explains the science behind these strings: "With a composition of 52% nickel and 48% iron, this highly magnetic string emphasises the mids and basses over regular steel strings. Designed for use in the aerospace industry and high-end electronics, the string's low coefficient of expansion helps to keep it "pitch stable" in a wide variety of environments. With its corrosion-resistant properties and unique blend of sound, it's a string for the discerning player looking for a special tonal character."

products

Roto

The combination of silky nickel wound and powerful steel core make Roto strings a great all-rounder for any playing style and genre. Made in the UK using the finest materials and precise tolerances, they offer reliability when it comes to consistent sound and performance. Popular worldwide, Rotos are the first choice for bands such as Oasis, The Darkness, Franz Ferdinand, Temples and many more.

products

Swing Bass

Since 1966, these Swing Bass strings, perfected by James How and John Entwistle, have been considered the industry standard, referenced by all bass string manufacturers. The bright, punchy, energetic sound of Swing Bass strings is part of early rock music history and moves bassists from the back to the front of the stage.
